Need a "SELT English test"?
IELTS tests for UK Visas and Immigration
If you are looking to work or study in the UK, you may need to apply for a UK Visa and demonstrate that you have met the required level of English by taking a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) or IELTS Life Skills.
Is there a difference in test format between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?
No, IELTS and IELTS for UKVI have the same format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. However, the Test Report Form (TRF) which contains your results is slightly different to show that you have taken the test at an official IELTS for UKVI location, which is approved by the UK Home Office.
If you take IELTS for UKVI, you can also use these results anywhere else where you can use IELTS.
Which test should you take?
If you are a student going to the UK, please check with your university/college/school if you need IELTS for UKVI or regular IELTS before booking it.
All British universities and colleges accept IELTS (Academic) results. This means you may not need to take an IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test, but can submit an IELTS (Academic) result instead.
If you are not a student, please always check with the visa authorities or your agent which test you need, before making a booking.
Life Skills A1 and B1 - for immigration to the UK only
Life Skills A1 or B1 is a test with Listening and Speaking only, and is only for immigration to the UK.
B1 test for immigration to Denmark (familiesammenføring)
If you are applying for immigration (familiesammenføring) to Denmark and need a "B1 test", book a regular IELTS test - this is accepted by the Danish immigration authorities. A score of roughly 4-5.5 corresponds to the required B1 level, which will be printed on your test report.
Do not book Life Skills B1 for this purpose, it is not accepted by the Danish immigration authorities.
UKVI test fee, registration and payment
The test fee for IELTS for UKVI is DKK 2.345
The fee for Life skills is DKK 1.380
You can find payment instructions in the blue Payment tab in the test taker portal and also in the acknowledgement email that you get after registration.
Test takers unable to register online can request an application form from the test centre.
Proof of identity
Please provide a passport for UKVI tests in Denmark and not a National ID card.
Preparation for the test
You can use the exact same preparation materials as for IELTS.
